Sue Lee(Hyesu Lee/Hyesue Lee)


She studied classical piano in South Korea.(B.M/M.M) She studied with leading professors such as Cho Jae-hyuk and Kim Jae-mi. At the time of her academic year, she won the first prize overall and awarded a number of scholarships in addition to the best grades. She wrote a master’s thesis on piano by analyzing Haydn’s piano sonata on the subject of the aesthetics of humor.

After learning about music aesthetics, she decided to major in musicology to study music in depth. Currently, she is writing a graduation thesis on American symphonies about WW2 for a master’s degree in musicology.

Under Professor Oh Hee-sook, she was an assistant researcher at Seoul National University’s “Korean Creative Opera” for three years. In 2021, she presented an academic forum of the 60th Music Aesthetics Research Association on digital music. Now she continues to study musicology as a full member of the Music Aesthetics Research Association.  While studying musicology, she studied various fields such as music neuroscience, music sociology, and music aesthetics, and deeply studied various music such as opera aesthetics, music criticism, contemporary music in the 20th and 21st centuries, performance techniques by period, music analysis in the 20th century, acoustics, 19th century music history by Dahlhaus and Taruskin, AI music, and modern Korean music. Also <Voice Music: A Painting of Music and Lyricity>(Monopoly, 2021) <Digital Revolution and Music> (Monopoly, 2021) <The Key Concepts of Musicology 96> (Taelim Publishing, 2023) has been co-written with her colleagues. 

She also gained several musical experiences by master classes with Olivier Gardon, Roland Proell, Ronan O’ Hora, Enrico Elisi, Jeno Jando, Timothy Johnson, David Westfall, Piotr Kupka, and Kim Jung-kwon. She won a total of 11 piano competitions in Korea, including first place in the piano category of the Virtuoso International Competition and first place in the piano category of the Mozart Korean Competition in Seoul. Also she gave many concerts, including a recital at the Music Center of the Northwest in the Seattle, United States. 

In addition, she has a number of instrumental and vocal accompaniment experiences. Including the accompaniment of the opera audition at the Seoul Arts Center, she performed a lot of accompaniments for students enrolled in many schools including Korea National University of Arts, Yonsei University, Royal College of Music, Chugye University, Konkuk University, Gachon University, Sungshin Women’s University, Gachon University, Sangmyung University, Suwon University, Hansae, and Seogyeong University. She also accompanied Korea’s famous competitions such as Sungjeong Competition/Rabella Voice Competition/Daegu Voice Competition/Nanpa Competition/Music Journal Competition/Music Education Newspaper Competition/T&B Competition.

She is also interested in music education. She has taught children and adults for 14 years and hosted seven adult amateur concerts during that time. She also established a music group for adult amateurs in 2018.  ​Through her music blog(Korean), she spreads various professional musical knowledge, including piano technical commentary, piano recital reviews/criticism, master-class commentary, and music thesis, and more than 550 piano teachers and amateurs subscribe to her blog.

Now, she moved to Panama in Aug. 2023. She became a member of the Asociación de Pianistas de Panamá(Panamanian Pianists Association) and was appointed as a judge of Concurso Juvenil de Piano(Young Pianists Competition)in October 2023. She has begun to learn about Latin American piano culture and has started her studies of Latin American music and composers.
